Manjushri / Jambiyang embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment - the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one's spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence and memory. His name means "gentle glory" and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushri is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, called geshes.
Manjushri's left hand is in Vitaraka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Prajnaparamita, or Perfection of Wisdom sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushri, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
This exquisite statue of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, is a remarkable example of artistic mastery. Finely sculpted from high-quality copper alloy using the traditional lost wax method, this piece exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship that defines such artworks. Every detail, from the five-pointed crown and ornate jewelry to the flowing robes, is meticulously hand-carved, showcasing the skill of master artisans.
ย The statue features several significant elements, including a beautifully crafted lotus base, a sword symbolizing wisdom, and an Utpala flower that holds the sacred Prajnaparamita sutra book atop it. Each component is designed with precision, contributing to the overall elegance of the piece. The rich hue resulting from careful oxidation enhances its beauty and liveliness, making it a captivating focal point.
ย Handmade by artisans renowned for their expertise in creating such statues, this artwork reflects a tradition that has been passed down through generations. It is not just a decorative item but a profound representation of spiritual wisdom and cultural heritage, making it a cherished addition to any collection.
